We are an independent online newspaper serving Whitby and its surrounding villages.
Our aim is to provide trusted and in-depth reporting on issues affecting Whitby, its residents and communities.
We are committed to providing fair, accurate and accessible local journalism, without paywalls.
We are here to cover stories which shape daily life in Whitby. To help keep our communities informed and connected – as well as holding decision-makers to account.
We believe a local news organisation should reflect the people it serves and that strong local journalism can contribute to a positive future for Whitby.
How will we do this?
Ink & Tide Publishing is founded by Emma Ryan and Ceri Oakes.
We are NCTJ qualified journalists with more than 35 years of experience in local, regional and national news between us.
We are passionate about giving the town, and its residents a voice, as well as documenting local life and asking the questions which matter.
Our stories are carefully selected each week, covering what we feel is most relevant to the town.
We are to research and cover issues, providing value and insight to what might have started out as a press release.
In a world occupied by AI and fake news, accuracy is incredibly important to us.
We adhere to the Editor’s Code of Practice, but we are only human – so if you do spot a mistake in any of our stories please let us know and we will fix it.

Who Are We?
Emma Ryan
An NCTJ qualified journalist with more than 20 years experience in local and regional newspapers, magazine and feature writing.
I started my career at the Barnsley Chronicle in 2003 after completing an MA in Print Journalism at the University of Sheffield.
It was a senior reporter’s role at the Whitby Gazette which led to me re-locating here in 2010.
In 2016, I joined the Yorkshire Evening Post covering crime, court, council, human interest and social affairs journalism, leading numerous high profile campaigns.
My specialism is farming and rural journalism, which I developed as editor of Country Post at The Yorkshire Post. I am a regular writer for The Yorkshire Post and have also written for COAST magazine, Yorkshire Life, Northern Farmer and the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) and Country, Land and Business Association (CLA) member magazines.

Ceri Oakes
A freelance press and lifestyle photographer.
After completing my NCTJ in photojournalism I joined the Whitby Gazette as its staff photographer in 2009.
I went on to work in national news covering the north east of England for all the major daily newspapers.
My photography has been featured in The Daily Mail, The Times, The Daily Express, The Guardian and The BBC as well as The Yorkshire Post.
I have also worked with local organisations such as the North York Moors National Park, Parkol and Botham’s.
Away from the camera, I am the press officer for Whitby RNLI, the founder of Whitby Wild Swimmers and brought back the Whitby Regatta Swim..

Tess Cherry
A re-homed five-year old Border Collie
Having seemingly been sold off cheap by a farmer as a failed sheepdog, we are hoping to turn her into a newshound instead. She can sniff the crumbs out of an exclusive and reacts fast to breaking news.
Tess is the newest member of the team and is often spotted gathering news (and sticks) at the beach or on the moors.
