It is from the skies to the sea for Whitby RNLI’s newly qualified helm.
RNLI volunteer crew member Tom Glasby – whose day job is as an airline pilot – is now a fully qualified helm on the D class in-shore lifeboat after successfully passing his final assessment on Tuesday.
Richard Dowson, coxswain at Whitby RNLI said: “Passing the assessment shows Tom’s dedication and commitment to the RNLI and saving lives at sea. Tom regularly attends training sessions with his fellow volunteers and has worked hard to gain the knowledge and skills required to become an ILB helm.”
Tom was assessed by Matt Blanchard, RNLI Coastal Lifeboat Trainer. The assessment included a theory exam before they took to the water and covered scenario-based practical tests such as searching for casualties and handling of the boat.
Tom said: “It has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to train as a helm and I would like to thank all the crew at Whitby for their help and support.”
The RNLI relies on highly trained volunteers to provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the coast. Ongoing training and assessments ensure that crews remain ready to respond whenever they are needed.
