It is a bit of a tradition that when you visit Whitby you call for fish and chips.
A group of Navy service personnel made sure they weren’t going to miss out as they sailed past Whitby while on patrol earlier this week.
The chefs onboard HMS Middleton were given the night off and 50 fish and chip suppers ordered from The Magpie. The tasty tea – including fish and chips, sausages and scampi – was picked up and sailed back to the war vessel in two trips by the ship’s seaboat.
While The Magpie is used to serving boats and arrivals in the harbour, it was the first time a vessel has phoned ahead with its order and launched to collect it.
Paul Gildroy, head chef at The Magpie, said: “I was told it gave their gallery staff a night off so they were very grateful. It was a pleasure to serve them, it’s the least we can do for their service to King and country.”
A spokesperson for HMS Middleton added: “It was great to be able to give our chefs a night off. The food and service were excellent and it really topped off our time on patrol off the east coast.”
