For the best part of 50 years Staithes and Runswick RNLI has operated inshore boats on this stretch of the coastline and, just like its colleagues in Whitby, it relies on public donations and support to keep going.
Each year, the village of Staithes hosts a weekend of family fun and fundraising to ensure the service can continue to keep sea-farers from the area safe.
It got underway last night with live music and the traditional Nightgown Parade, for which people lined the narrow streets to watch.
Hundreds of people – made up of villagers, visitors and RNLI volunteers – took part in the procession which started on the Staith in the bottom of the village and proceeded along the High Street cobbles and up the bank, finishing near the Captain Cook Inn.
Earlier today, visitors to the event met RNLI volunteers, took part in variety of fundraising stalls, games and attractions as well as delighting in the annual lifeboat exercise, featuring Staithes and Runswick RNLI.
The popular raft race saw competitors taking to the water in a colourful display of creativity and determination.
One of the weekend’s most popular events, as the Staithes and Runswick Lifeboat weekend continues tomorrow, will be the duck race and thanksgiving services in Staithes and Runswick Bay.
Lifeboat Weekend Coordinator Colin Harrison said: “Lifeboat Weekend is always a fantastic occasion for the village, providing an opportunity for people to enjoy themselves while supporting the RNLI and learning more about the work our volunteers carry out to help save lives at sea.
“Every pound raised helps support our lifesaving service, and we’re incredibly grateful for the continued support we receive from the local community, visitors, businesses and volunteers who make the weekend possible.”
