In the heart of Whitby, tucked away on Skinner Street, you’ll find something rather special.

The Dispensary is far more than a health food shop – it’s a community health initiative dedicated to supporting wellbeing, sustainability and connection across the town.

Operated by Common Cause CIC, a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, The Dispensary combines ethical retail with community-focused activities and projects designed to help people live healthier, more connected lives.

Stepping through the doors of The Dispensary, visitors discover what many describe as an oasis of calm.

The shop offers an extensive range of organic, vegetarian, vegan and ethically sourced products, including fresh fruit and vegetables, natural supplements, herbal remedies, skincare, aromatherapy products and environmentally friendly household essentials.

Local producers are strongly supported, with products from brands including BeeVital, Sweet Cecily’s, Baytown Coffee and Whitby Seasalt, sitting alongside carefully selected brands from farther afield. The Dispensary also recently began to sell carefully selected alcohol; organic wines alongside vegan and gluten-free beers from a local brewery.

The Dispensary’s guiding principle is LOVE – Local, Organic, Vegetarian or Vegan, and Ethical wherever possible.

This ethos influences everything from the products on the shelves to the wider work undertaken by the organisation. Customers can also reduce waste through refillable household, skincare and haircare products, helping to cut down on single-use plastic consumption.

However, wellbeing at The Dispensary extends beyond shopping. The venue regularly hosts events and workshops covering topics such as mindfulness, meditation, nutrition, herbal medicine, complementary therapies and healthy living.

Over the years, it has also welcomed music evenings, community meals, talks and creative activities, providing opportunities for people to learn, share experiences and build meaningful connections.

Community is at the heart of everything The Dispensary does. At a time when many people are looking for ways to improve their health, reduce their environmental impact and feel more connected to their local community, The Dispensary offers all three under one roof.

Whether you’re seeking natural products, a welcoming conversation or a wellbeing event to attend, this unique Whitby health shop and hub continues to demonstrate that health is about much more than what we consume – it’s about the communities we create together.
