Black Umfolosi performances are inspired by the traditional song and dance of their native southern Africa. £15

Venue: Staithes Memorial Hall

Black Umfolosi performances are inspired by the traditional song and dance of their native southern Africa, with a beauty and enthusiasm that is unrivalled.

Their performances are energy driven and completely engaging, mixing a great gentleness of spirit and song with an exuberance in dance. Their trademark harmonies mixed with intricate rhythms, clicking and clapping are highlighted during their brilliantly choreographed shows with a full range of movements from subtle to vibrant stomping and leaping!

The group formed in 1982 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, naming themselves after the Umfolozi Omnyama River – an area which their ancestors can be traced to.

Arguably Zimbabwe’s greatest ambassadors, the group have a natural ability to communicate passion and feeling in their spectacular performances that thrill audiences worldwide.

‘An absolutely superb night had by all. Amazing musicianship and showmanship, really well received by a lively crowd.’ Adam Laughton, Wiltshire Live Music Centre

Musicport Director/Programmer Jim McLaughlin said “We are delighted to welcome back this amazing group to the UK after a number of years and we know Staithes is excited to see them back as they last performed here in 2011. We are expecting a full house for this intimate and totally acoustic show. This will be our last event before Musicport Festival in October, the full line-up of which will be announced shortly but we are delighted that once again Arts Council England have agreed to help fund our activities and we think this year’s international line-up is going to be as strong as ever.”

We strive to keep event details up to date. However, changes/cancellations are beyond our control and some regular events may not take place on bank holidays. Contact the venue/organiser before attending. Please contact us if your event details need amending.
