Near perfect sea conditions and a spectacular sunrise greeted swimmers as they gathered for the Whitby Regatta sea swim early on Saturday morning.
More than 70 swimmers took to the water for the two swim distances – two miles from Sandsend to the Battery Parade and a 1000 metre distance from the end of the beach huts.
This year was the fourth Regatta sea swim. The event, which had last taken place in the 1980s, was resurrected by The Anchor’s Ceri Oakes in 2022 but the first year had to be cancelled due to a sea fret.
There was no such danger this Saturday and all swimmers got off safely, despite an early start of 7.30am to work with the tide times.
The winner of the Sandsend distance was Steven Horner in a time of 46 minutes, 24 seconds. Paul de St Paer won the 1000m distance in 18.32.
Ceri said: “The swim went really well and we couldn’t have hoped for a better morning. Each year there is more interest in the event and we are attracting swimmers from far and wide but it is always great to see so many locals taking part.
“All the organising and planning is worth it when you see the swimmers getting out of the sea back in Whitby and getting together afterwards.
“I have to say a huge thankyou to all the local businesses for sponsoring the swim and Whitby Yacht Club for hosting swimmers and volunteers at the end for a well deserved hot drink and bacon sandwich.
“Each year we look to develop and build on the event and we are already looking forward to next year.”
