Whitby’s RNLI crews were called upon to help paramedics who had been called to a person injured in the harbour.
Paramedics were already on the scene and had determined the casualty had suffered a broken leg, but couldn’t safely get them out of the water.
The inshore lifeboat was launched at 11.37am this morning (Saturday) and quickly located the casualty near a pontoon.
Crew recovered the injured person from the water and took them in the inshore lifeboat back to Whitby Lifeboat Station where they were transported via a stretcher to waiting paramedics who then continued medical care.
Helm on the inshore lifeboat Adam Wright said: “We would urge people to take extra care entering the water within harbours. There are many hidden dangers that can cause injury.
“There is also a risk of cold water shock, which can cause a person to panic and lead to drowning. Our advice would be to enter the water slowly, in a safe area such as from a beach or slipway.”
